・指板の作成

前回黒檀の薄い板を２枚貼り付けたが、はみ出た余分な部分を切り落とす。

　　

次に指板の裏側をカンナで削って薄くし、丸ノミでカーブを彫る。
ともかくヴァイオリン作りは何かにつけて木材をどんどん削っていくことにあるみたい。

　　

大体こんな形でネックにくっつくことになる。

キットについていた指板はモダン用なのでこれを使うわけにはいかず、バロック用の指板を作成することになった。

素材として使うのはバスウッド（アメリカン・ホワイトウッド、リンデンとも言う）。モダンで使われる黒檀よりはかなり軽い。大まかな切り出しは師匠がやってくれたので、この表面に黒檀（突板、薄い板状のもの）を２枚貼り付ける作業から。

　

突板を大まかに切ってボンドで接着してクランプで固定する。

今日はそれ以外の作業としてネックのネジ止め補強と、ヴァイオリンの中に貼るラベルの作成をした。

ラッパのマークのシールが貼ってあるヴァイオリンも珍しいのでは。

　

ナチュラルトランペットの紐の巻き方 - How to change a natural/baroque trumpet cord.

ナチュラル／バロックトランペットの紐。

長らく使っていると汚れてくるし、自分の好きな色に変えたり、あるいはブロックの位置を前後に移動させて持った時のバランスを良くしたり、いろいろと工夫ができるので、紐の巻き替えができるようになると何かと便利です。

というわけで、ナチュラルトランペットの紐の巻き方について写真と共に説明したいと思います。

It is useful to be able to rewind the cord of a natural trumpet in various ways, since it gets dirty after using it for long period of time, or making it to your favorite color, or moving the position of the block back and forth to improve the balance when you hold it. Therefore, I would like to explain how to wind a natural trumpet cord with pictures.
(These photos were taken during my visit to Egger Brass Instruments in Basel in June 2007)

楽器が固定してあるので作業が楽です。

Mr. Gerd Friedel of the Egger kindly taught me how to make it.
If the instrument is fixed like the picture, it makes easy to work with.

マウスパイプとベル側のパイプの間に長方形の板を挟みます。
板をテープなどで仮留めしておくと作業がやり易いです。
このテープは剥がしたりせず結局そのままにしています。
ある程度の長さを残してマウスピース側からU字型に紐を渡します。
この時、U字の先がブロックの先をちょうど超えるくらいに余裕をもたせます。
（上下どちらでも構いませんが、写真のように楽器を持ったときに下側になる方で作業するのが一般的です）

どれくらい紐を残すかは、マウスパイプ側にタッセルなどの飾りをつけるかどうかで決まりますが、つけないのであれば5cmもあれば十分でしょう。

Place a rectangular block between the mouth pipe and the pipe on the bell side.
It is easier to work if the block is temporarily fastened with tape. This tape will not be removed and is left in place after all.
Leave a certain length of cord from the mouthpiece side, and place the cord on the block in a U-shape.
At this point, leave enough room for the end of the U-shaped string to just exceed the end of the block.
(Either the top or bottom side of the block can be used, but as shown in the photo, it is generally recommended to work on the side that will be on the bottom when the instrument is held.)

How much string is left depends on whether or not tassels or other decorations are to be attached to the mouth pipe side, but if not, 5cm should be sufficient.

U字部分を軽く押さえておきます。

Hold lightly by hand on the U-shaped part.

一方の管（ここではマウスパイプ側）に巻き付けます。

Wrap it around one pipe (in this case, the mouth pipe side).

一巻きしたらもう一方の管の方に渡します。
そのとき８の字を描くようにクロスさせます。

After one roll, pass it to the other tube.
The two tubes are then crossed in a figure of 8 form.

反対側（ベル側のパイプ）でも一巻きします。

Make a single roll on the opposite side (bell side pipe).

ベル側で一巻きさせたら渡した紐の内側を通して反対側に紐（の長い方）を持っていきます。

After one roll on the bell side, bring the string (the longer one) to the other side through the inside of the string you passed.

順々にぐるぐる巻きします。このとききつめにしておいた方がいいでしょう。
写真ではその後の作業がわかりやすいように隙間を開けていますが、実際は隙間ができないようにします。

Wrap around in order. It is better to wrap tightly at this point.In the photo, the gap is open to make it easier to see the subsequent work, but in reality, there should be no gap in wrapping.

板の最後まで巻いたら、そこでまた８の字に巻き、きちんと内側から８の字が描けているかを確認します。

When you wind to the end of the block, wind again in a figure 8 form same as the opposite side of the block, checking to see if you have drawn a figure 8 form properly.

最初に作ってあったU字の部分に紐を通します。

Pass the cord through the U-shaped part that was made first.

紐を通したら最初に余らせた端と、巻き終わった紐とを持って両側から引っ張ります。
U字に通した部分がブロックのちょうど真ん中くらいに来るまでマウスパイプ側に引っ張りましょう。
きつく巻いているので力が要ります。

Once the cord is threaded through, take the first excess end and the wrapped string and pull from both sides.
Pull it toward the mouth pipe until the U-shaped part is right in the middle of the block. Since the cord has been wound tightly, it may need a lot of strength.

余った紐は好みでベルの方まで巻きます。

ちなみにこのときパイプに（床屋さんの置き物みたいに）ぐるぐる巻くのはEggerの趣味のようで、昔の絵などではそうやって巻いている例は見たことがありません。だいたいだらーんと垂れてベルまで持っていっていますね。

マウスパイプ側の余った紐については、ブロックのところで切断してもいいし、（写真14のように）その先にタッセルを付けてもいいでしょう。

The excess string can be wrapped around to the bell if desired.

The excess string on the mouthpipe side can be cut off at the block, or you can attach a tassel to the end of the string (as shown in Photo 14).

練習用に自分の楽器にも新しい紐を巻いてみました。

I tried to wrap a new cord to my instrument for practice.

完成型です。GerdさんにもOKをもらいました。

【Vn製作】第21回目 ネックの接着

・ネックをボディに膠で接着する。（のちにネジで補強する）

膠付けする部分は木の小口（横断面）にあたるので、水分の吸収が良く、膠も２度塗りしたりしてたっぷりとつけてあげる。

　

膠付けしたらクランプで固定して一晩おく。

　

【Vn製作】第20回目 ネックの角度調整

バロックヴァイオリンとモダンヴァイオリンとの違いはいくつかあるけれど、本体とネックの角度が違う（よりテンションを得るため、モダンの方が傾斜がきつい）のもその１つだ。

今回はその調整のため、ネックの本体との接着部分を多少角度をつけてカットする必要がある。
（写真の鉛筆で引いた線の部分。またこれに応じて底の面も角度調整しなければならない）

この広い部分をカンナで平らにするのは結構難しかった。

　

【Vn製作】第19回目 ネックの成型

バスバーという大きな山を越えたので、気分も新たに別作業に取り組む。

・ネックの成型

今回は安直キットなのでネックも最初から切り出す必要はなくて、大まかな成型がなされているのを仕上げるだけだ。

キットに入っていたネックはこちら。

　

主にヤスリを使って面取りしたり、スクレーパーで綺麗な曲線に仕上げたりする。

　

黄金比率に従って渦巻きをいかに美しく作り上げるかは、きっと昔の（今も）名工の腕の見せ所だったんだろうと思う。
自分で木材を一から切り出したら不恰好になるに違いないが、今回は「なんちゃってキット」で申し訳ない。
